Okay. Definition time. The definition of “transfiguration” is a profound, dramatic, and often positive change in a person or object’s appearance, character, or state. It signifies an uplifting transformation—such as a person glowing with joy or a major improvement in beauty or status—rather than just a simple change. From a sacred perspective, Jesus underwent a profound, dramatic and positive change in his appearance and state. Some theologies identify this as the moment Jesus became the “son of Man, or God.” Good. I think we get that. That’s why we come here every week.
So, yeah, Transfiguration can come through a spiritual awakening. It can come when great things happen. And, it can also happen when bad things happen. Many of us have experienced this kind of transfiguration personally in the last few months. I’d like to briefly explain the transfiguration that took place as a result of Sam’s illness.
Almost since Sam had his hernia surgery, those close to us gathered around. Family gently imposed themselves into our lives and let us know that we are surrounded by people who care. When Sam went into the ICU, more and more friends were added to the mix. My phone and messages were filled with people expressing their concern, love, and desire to help. People willing to go out of their way to provide the kind of lovingkindness that will make Sam’s and my life more comfortable. I’m sure you’ve already thought of ways that you can help Polly and Gunner.
This, in my opinion, is capital-T Transfiguration. This is a profound, dramatic, and positive change in appearance, character, and state. When we reach out to others in love, we are transfigured. When we put someone’s needs before ours, we say, “you are worthy of my attention,” and lift them up. This past week – this scary, unsure, and exhausting week – we have not only been surrounded by transfigured family and friends, but nurses and doctors who have dedicated their lives to putting others before themselves 12 hours a day. They are Transfigured. And through the transfiguration of the people around us, we, as the recipients of their love and dedication, are transformed. Let the Transformed praise God for the Transfigured. Amen!
